What is an IP address?

An IP address is a long string of numbers assigned to every device connected to a network that uses Internet Protocol as the medium for communication

IP(Internet Protocol)address is a logical address to identify and locate a specific machine on a local area network / Internet or it can also be defined as a unique address that identifies a device on the internet or a local network

• Static IP address : This represents the IP which doesn’t change due to change in network like webserver
• Dynamic IP address :This represents the IP which changes due to whenever there is a change in network like our mobile devices ,laptops and pc’s.
• Public IP address means the IP address can be visited from any computer in the world.
• Private IP address means the IP address can only be used by those on the same network.

IP address classes :

1. ClassA(Unicast)
2. ClassB(Unicast)
3. ClassC(Unicast)
4. ClassD(Multicast)
5. ClassE(Reserved)

IPv4 vs IPv6

There are two versions of IP addresses: IPv4 and IPv6, and they have different formats, the major difference between them being that it’s possible to create vastly more unique IPv6 addresses (2 power 128) than IPv4 addresses (2power32).

Due to increasing number of Iot devices IPv4 address are out and IPv6 was implemented
